Today I awoke and immediately thought about all the things that needed to be done. In the still quietness of the morning my thoughts raced contemplating the to-do list in my head. The list seized my thoughts, bombarding me with things that were important. Exercise, meal plans, therapy sessions, drinking lemon water, zoom meetings, what time should I go walking today, what kind of smoothie should I make so I can get my daily allowance of veggies today. I get exhausted just thinking about what I think about! Have you ever felt this? The minute I closed my eyes in prayer and meditation, random thoughts unleashed to steal my peace.
But somehow, the still small voice made its way to the surface. “Stop!” the voice scolded. “It’s the little things that make the biggest difference.”
My mind stopped racing, as I sat still and thought “Huh … the little things.”
What exactly are the little things that make the biggest difference?
It’s those simple things that we think are not that important. The decision to stop and watch the sunrise instead of making the to-do list. The decision to take 5 minutes to read one scripture, instead of dedicating myself to 30 minutes and find myself distracted most of the time.
The little things make the biggest difference.
Little things like choosing to make a phone call to a distant relative whom you haven’t spoken to in years. Just one little thing like that can mean the world to someone.
It’s the little things.
The warm hug, the kiss on the cheek, buying flowers and putting them on a table to enjoy. The little things make the biggest difference in your day.
So even if I never decide on the meal plan for the week, my family will not starve. Even if I don’t get the exercise in like I want to it’s okay. I can try again tomorrow. But just for today, I will give my attention to the little things, maybe just one or two.
Little things add up and before you realize, you’ve made a tremendous difference in your life and the life of someone else, without even realizing it.
What little thing can you do today? Today I started with watching the sunrise.
Be blessed,
Jen
